5,000 Lumens- Speedial
Okay so, I stumbled upon this song while doing some research for another band I will be writing about later. They are playing a show together and I thought, why not listen to the whole lineup. And yeah, I’m happy I did. I put this song on in the car for my best friend the other day, and she saw the 7 minute span of the song, immediately went silent and added it to her playlist. So I’m not the only one who fell in love with this piece quickly. It has everything that I want from a song these days. Peaceful horns, beautiful fingerpicked guitar parts. A song that initially starts off quietly and unassuming, building up into a harmonious climax of gorgeous instruments complimenting one another perfectly. The lyrics are short, delivered instantly without much lingering on a vocal melody. The first half of this song, the instruments are taking the reins and leading so wonderfully. We stumble upon a valley within the song structure around minute four. There was an anxious build which now has to be reformed. Pretty immediately, a new song emerges. There are more shimmering moments from every instrument. The lead vocals are taking charge beautifully, with a singing voice brilliantly hitting every correct pitch, some challenging high notes done with ease. Then a second voice comes back into frame, the one which guided us along the first half of the song. The two comforting voices wrap up the song incredibly intertwined within themselves and the music. I can’t help but to love this song. It truly has every aspect of music that makes me spiral into a very passionate love affair with a song. Speedial’s only other song on streaming platforms is “Nocturne,” which is an absolute banger. I really want to cover both songs but that would put them in the “Artists” category and I need more music from them. I mean they are just exactly what I love right now. Two female singers, horns/winds, airy drums, and complex song structures. Really hands down a fabulous band. Would killlllllll to see them live.

I’ve Never Met Anyone I thought I Could Really Love (Until I Met You)- Westside Cowboy
Okay so this song and my band’s song were both featured by a third party “underground picks” account and I am so stoked. They were featured a mere two days after we were. What good company. Quick flex, sorrryyy.
I stumbled upon this song within the praise it consumed from indie heads that I truly respect. Yeah guys, even AYALA (me btw) (capitalized for emphasis) takes music recommendations. I can’t just give and give and give. I must take. We are all selfish, and yet have much more to give than we ever realize. Music will forever be an exchange my friends, stop treating “recs” or someone “putting you on” as a debt or even a commodity. If someone shows you a song they think you’ll like, your response shouldn’t be trying to one up them with a more niche and experimental pick. It should be a huge kiss on the cheek. Love the people around you, love your music, and love yourself. My friends. Love more.
Okay that bullshit aside. Let’s kick it right in with the reason there has been a shift within our culture. British people are making emo, and its fucking good. It sounds like they’re from Portland. They are from Manchaster!!! What is going on!!!!!
“I’ve Never Met Anyone…” by Westside Cowboy is a song to sing with your boys, your homies, and everyone who could acquire a beer in hand. It is a sweet sentiment of love and loss. Starting off strong with a band name scream, shit it’s so midwest emo. The main riff punches you right in the eye. Leading you into a screaming intro, which is soon revoked. And the verse starts rolling. It is the sweetest thing I’ve ever heard. Innocent vocals guided by a twangy guitar and faint drums. The male and female vocals harmonize softly, ever so lightly. Soon that familiar melody returns, ready to swing us into the chorus. Undoubtedly the catchiest part of the song. It is headbang inducing. And makes me want to grab my closest friends and squeeze them tight. Simple yet effective; the multiple vocals, and heavy drums, all complete a heartwarming sentiment. The screams are real, powerful, and so essential. We got like three vocals on the final chorus, hell fucking yeah. I wish I could break down further what this song feels like. But it’s becoming increasingly difficult. Its just a sick fucking song. There’s no beating around that bush. I’ve never been a midwest emo girl, this might not even be midwest emo. I don’t know. I hate genres. But I do know I love this song. And that’s all I need.
They are on a pretty awesome press tour, and also a real tour right now. Can’t wait for more Westside Cowboy music. Catch em live my UK friends. Meanwhile, I will continue sitting on my high horse that we are “underground music” peers.

It’s Getting Brighter- sleep well.
Who else has ever felt sad?
Okay. Fuck. Terrible start.
At the time of writing this-filthy, lying, cheating, Los Angeles winter is in full swing. Meaning there is no winter and it’s February. It rained for one day. But those gloomy feelings are imminent. Bundled up and shivering. We are all grasping for some warmth. Whether it would be from other people, or just a song. During these icy times I just wanted to remind you all; It’s getting brighter.
“It’s Getting Brighter” is the name of a song, as well as the sophomore record from the band “sleep well.” Within the context of this blog post I am going to be writing about the song. The record might get posted soon, but I need more time with it at the moment. “It’s Getting Brighter” is the sunshine that I needed around these lonely nights. It begins calm, composed, restrained. A simple guitar spearheaded by gentle lead vocals. The atmosphere grows, soothing every knot in your back, helping you closely collapse inwards. A solo violin (or string instrument) weasels itself in lightly, aching, devastating. Around a minute into the sweet, airy comfort. We are guided into a gorgeous harmonic break by the lyrics “The Jazz Band is playing the sax,” right along the introduction of a seductive saxophone line. Now the groove is in full play. The strings and horns are sparkling and screaming in the background. The lyrics and melody float above it all, yearning and yet decisive. The repetition of the line “don’t you dare figure me out,” really hits me these days. We all crave to be understood for who we really are. For a person to see us for our true intentions, to embrace our soul. And yet, that idea is the highest form of intimacy I could think of. Once someone understands you on that level, you can’t forget them. You can’t ignore them. This person becomes important to you, to your life. And sometimes, for those of us with too much going on. It may just be better to have no one figure you out. Because once they do, it becomes something greater than just a formality. The remainder of the song follows a “hills and valleys” sort of structure. The melody gets quite, calm. Just to be unleashed within sound quickly after. It is romantic, charismatic, and won me over quickly. The suave groove leads us all the way until the end of the song. Sweet as ever, leaving you comforted and stable.
Overall, this song is a sweet little tune. The instrumentals are fabulous and the lyric content is as relatable as ever. With all these cold winters coming up. At least now I know I have this warm cup of song to keep me company.
Texas folks this is all you!!! Pop off to sleep well and show them some love. I will be waiting for either a ticket to Austin or them in Los Angeles. Not very patiently. Need to see these guys live!
